There was a strange delay to the release of the ball in FIFA 16

One annoyance that still exists from the last couple of FIFA’s is with the corners. The goalkeeper is somehow still able to claim the ball from a cross at waist height unchallenged, completely ignoring the fact there may be 3-4 players in his vicinity. However from the matches I have played, I have witnessed quite a few individual errors such as goalkeepers coming out to punch the ball and completely missing. As annoying and frustrating as that can be, it is refreshing to see these kind of mistakes as it adds extra realism to the overall playing experience. The most notable addition in FIFA 16 is the inclusion of women’s international teams, with 12 teams being included. The only mode included for the women’s teams is the International Cup. In regards to gameplay, playing as a women’s team takes on a much slower pace, and completely different mechanic to the men’s teams.

But it wasn't a perfect experience, and there were areas that needed work. Having already spent more hours than we can count playing PES 2016, it's a truly remarkable game, innovating and iterating on what came before it in so many ways, and fixing most of the issues people had with it last year. Here are the reasons that Konami's football game has EA's FIFA beat for the 2016 edition. Last year, PES played really well. Even the most ardent fans, however, will admit that passing was still an issue. There was a strange delay to the release of the ball in FIFA 16, meaning that employing a quick-moving Arsenal or Barcelona-like team game was an issue.

I think it is almost a miracle that James is able to score any goals given the position he has to play in at Real Madrid. James is basically a maker rather than a scorer and Real Madrid have the continent’s best finishers. How about giving you more things to do, such as letting you bring together a backroom staff, creating an actual stadium or even just interacting a lot more with your players? How about actual training sessions that boost your team and pro more than just filling quest-like containers such as 100 shots on goal to boost your shooting stats? We’d love to see the next FIFA take a page from NBA 2K15 and include some RPG elements, such as press conferences or actual conversations, where the outcome affects your pro or manager’s career.

The more useful control is the "driven pass," which involves a standard pass command modified with the right bumper button. The pass is faster and sharper to beat the defense but the recipient has a harder time taking control of the ball, particularly if he or she is lower-rated in the ball handling department, or if the passer has a low passing skill. The combined effect of the new commands and options is a very welcoming, very inclusive FIFA, which is appropriate considering one of its centerpiece features, the debut of women's soccer. And while the defensive AI still seems curiously more vulnerable to solo runs by fast-paced players than flurries of passes followed by a cross and a shot, you’re not constantly being bulldozed by the likes of Messi and Ronaldo speeding through the center and planting one right in the net. FIFA 16 has class. It’s happy for you to score but it won’t give you goals for playing cheap.

The aforementioned frustrations-soft fouls, overpowered crossing-become more of a problem online. Tweaks can be patched in, but those who have grown frustrated with FIFAs of the past are unlikely to feel any different this year. Artists such as Years and Years, Sam Smith and Bastille prop up a soundtrack that couldn’t be more "FIFAish" if it tried, and in turn, it underlines how Konami is still playing major catch-up when it comes to presenting its menus and off-the-pitch atmosphere.

The Fifa series has enjoyed a rejuvenation since the leap to this generation of machines, but all too often matches in Fifas 14 and 15 were dominated by players with elite pace and power attributes. Mercifully, thanks to the above tweaks - “confidence in defending” in particular – that’s no longer the case. Centre backs mark snugly, constantly buffeting and tugging at even the strongest forwards. Full-backs track properly and look to step in front of onrushing wingers before they can reach top speed, while defensive midfielders break on to under-hit opposition passes, always seeking to spring a deadly counterattack.
