Trials Fusion is also one of the most flipping awesome games on the PlayStation 4

There aren’t nearly enough motorcycle games that let you play a round of tennis with a penguin, of that we can all agree. Alas, until some clever publisher transforms the concept into a yearly franchise with a pricey season pass, Trials Fusion will have to do. Not only does it boast squirrels and black-and-white birds, but it’s also one of the most flipping awesome games on the PlayStation 4. ‘Flipping’ because, well, it’s a physics-based platform game, and ‘awesome’ because it’s a really good physics-based platform game.

They're far more varied and come packaged under the "RedLynx vs. All-Stars" banner. But back to that unicorn -- it's meant to be ridiculous, silly fun. That may seem obvious, but some people take Trials leaderboards very seriously. Think of this set as something you'll go through once -- maybe a few times more, tops, to get better medals -- and never touch again.

In what may be an effort to spice up the setting, developers RedLynx have added the very first storyline seen in a Trials game to Fusion. Yes, there's finally a vague explanation as to why you're putting yourself through all these deadly challenges. The storyline, related by a perky female AI voice-over, goes absolutely nowhere and features some truly awful writing, made more awful by its repetition every time you replay a level to try to complete it flawlessly (a requirement to unlock the late-game content). Merificully the voice-over can be turned off in Trials Fusion's settings in the first level without fear of missing out on anything but aggravation from then on.

A variety of challenges on every stage
One of the ways Fusion pushes you to the limit is with challenges. One of Trials Evolution’s coolest features is its achievements system that forced gamers to do things like go through a whole stage without leaning or letting off the throttle. While Evolution had a handful of these, each of Fusion’s stages has three challenges.

This addition gives you plenty of opportunities to distract yourselves from the core experience with skill challenges like performing 10 flips without crashing. It also has more ridiculous situations like a tennis match against a penguin. This adds hours worth of content on top of an experience that can already get pretty lengthy if you spend any time trying to perfect a level.

One concern going in was that there would be an inconsistency between the player-created courses and the ones RedLynx designed. I didn't find that to be the case at all. If they weren't labeled separately, I'm not certain I'd be able to tell the levels apart. One takes place in a computer. Another is reminiscent of Limbo's shadowy, saw-filled world. Too many tracks employ lava but, on the whole, this bundle has exactly the variety I missed in the often bland base version of Trials Fusion.

Trials Fusion is one of the best games on the PlayStation 4, there’s no doubt about that. Convince your friends to get it, and established relationships will turn sour faster than an Evel Knievel-esque stunt. Challenging, funny, and exciting – gaming rarely gets any better than this.
